Hopi Ear Candles
What are Hopi Ear Candles?
Thermal Auricular Therapy (also known as Hopi Ear Candles) is a pleasant and non-invasive treatment of the ears used for a variety of conditions. Safe for all ages, and an alternative to syringing
A Brief History
This is an ancient and natural therapy handed down by many civilisations. It is believed that the Ancient Greeks used ear candles, initially for cleansing, purifying and healing on a spiritual basis, but much later on a purely physical basis. The practice reached the modern world via the Native American Hopi Indians of North Arizona. Ear candles were used traditionally by Shaman healers. Ancient wall paintings show their importance in initiation rituals and healing ceremonies. Candles made today are based on an old traditional formula originating from the Hopi Indians.
How do Hopi Ear Candles Work?
The candles are made from natural ingredients - beeswax, honey extracts, sage, St Johns Wort, chamomile and organically grown flax
The candles work on a chimney principle, drawing any impurities to the surface where they can be gently removed. A few facts, Hopi Ear Candling does NOT create suction, or pull ear wax or debris out of the ear, if this were true the whole concept of ear candling would be as dangerous and uncomfortable as syringing.
There have been NO clinical studies to prove how it does work, but the fact remains, experienced by Katie's personal use during a headache, sinus infection & hayfever, ear candling does have a positive affect on many un-wanted ear, nose and throat disorders.
One theory believed, is that the gentle warmth and penetration of the very light smoke produced during the burning of the candle, slightly resonates (vibrates) the ear drum, encouraging a change in the energy pathways (the same energy pathways that are utilised in Reflexology, Acupressure & Reiki) creating balance and harmony with-in the unreachable inner ear and sinus cavities.
They equalise the pressure in the head and ears, making them suitable for most conditions. The flow of secretion is gently stimulated and the vapour collects, removing impurities or deposits.
Most of these are carried away through the candle chimney, although some of them can be found condensed in the candle after its removal from the ear, for example, wax residue, or could even work their way up to the surface 24-48 hours later.
A typical treatment
You will be asked to lie comfortably and listen to relaxing music. A candle is then gently placed into the Auditory Canal, where it will be lit. The candle is held in a vertical position and kept steady. You will experience a warm, comfortable feeling and a pleasant crackling sound as the candle burns down. The treatment is then repeated on the other ear. Both ears will be treated in all cases. Most clients find the treatment deeply relaxing, and some even fall asleep!
When both candles have been used a short but relaxing facial massage will be given. Some candles will burn more quickly then others but on the whole a treatment will take about 45 minutes. Some clients may experience a slight headache or light popping in the ears after treatment, this in normal and will ease with-in a few hours.
Hopi ear candling is suitable for children, those that wear hearing aids (these will be removed during the treatment) and is a good alternative for people who have found syringing uncomfortable or in-effective.
